Console WarIt’s that time of year again. Christmas shoppers are gearing up and making lists of everything that their children want. On the top of the majority of those lists you will hear things like “I want a PS3” or “I really need a Wii” or “How can I play Halo 3 online without an Xbox 360?” Of course you are more likely to see one of those game consoles on the top of most of those lists – but which one will it be this year?

Last year it was clear that the Nintendo Wii had struck gold and thousands of children and adults made their way to the store to get themselves their very own. Nintendo didn’t expect it to become that popular and they ended up by running out of consoles and parts. But will they have that problem again? Are the people still fascinated with this console?

It is still a little too early to tell. However, it looks like the consoles are already getting started. At least some of them are. Earlier this year Microsoft lowered the price of the 360 and made it more affordable while offering one with more space for all of your games, music, and movies.

Microsoft did have some good news this week and said that they 360 has outsold the original Xbox console. “We’ve already surpassed the installed base of the original Xbox–which is a really significant milestone,” Microsoft entertainment said.

“We’re at a price point that is uniquely placed–not least of which because we’re in somewhat of a challenging economic time,” he added. ” Ever since we dropped the price seven weeks ago, we’ve outstripped PS3 on a weekly run rate in all the territories we care about in EMEA–specifically the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Russia.”

According to numbers that have been released since September 3rd Nintendo has sold 34.55 million consoles and the Sony has sold 16.84 million of their PS3. Microsoft has yet to release their numbers. Which either means that they are in last place again or they are lose to beating out the Wii. For now the Wii is still winning – but will people keep wanting it? Or will the fun finally fade?
