Sony released its own somewhat embellishment download-to-own gaming service on Tuesday, forcing PSP players who want to play PlayStation games on their PSP handheld console to use the recently-released PS3. The PSP console will imitate the old PSP hardware, Sony said. The five titles to be released will cost $5.99 apiece: Cool Boarders, Crash Bandicoot, Hot Shots Golf 2, Syphon Filter, and Tekken 2.

Additional first and third-party PlayStation titles will be added on an ongoing basis to the PlayStation Store to keep, with a second batch of PlayStation titles slated for release later this month, Sony said.

“Downloadable PlayStation emulated games on the PSP is just the beginning, but it underscores our vision for leveraging the wide breadth of content that’s available from the PlayStation brand, and delivers value to gamers well beyond the initial purchase of their PS3 and PSP,” said Peter Dille, senior vice-president product marketing of SCEA, in a statement. Every system is built with a hard disk drive and offers every customer free access to the PlayStation Store so that they can experience the full extent of the PlayStation library.

Sony follows Microsoft with the launch of the download-to-own games service for its console. Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade offered gamers the chance to download older arcade games for a price measured in “points”, exclusive to Microsoft’s service. But Nintendo is also expected to offer a broad back catalog of its own games, as well as third-party titles.
