Samsung LogoSamsung Electronics stated on Wednesday that it has created a multi-performing chip for mobile devices called OneDRAM, as a part of its fusion memory world scheme initiated by chief executive Hwang Chang-gyu. It is the second generation of Samsung’s fusion memory lineup after 2003’s OneNAND chip.

The OneDRAM can boost the processing speed of high-end multimedia phones up to five times that of existing ones, by integrating functions of two separate memory chips into one, the company said. Mobile phones normally have two core processing units one for communication and the other for multimedia processing and they each have respective memory banks. But OneDRAM acts as a shared memory bank and coordinates the two cores, reducing needless data transactions in the circuit.

The news of the OneDRAM development was released hours after Hwang claimed that the semiconductor industry is at the doorstep of the largest shift ever. The Fusion Era will be massive in scope, encompassing the fields of information technology, bio-technology and nano-technology and will create boundless opportunities for new growth to the semiconductor industry, he said, in his keynote speech at the 2006 International Electronic Devices Meeting (IEDM) held in San Francisco.

Hwang was also honored with the Andy Grove Award at the IEDM meeting. The award is regarded as the industrys top honor with only six recipients so far. He said on Tuesday that fusion has been the keyword of Hwang and Samsung’s next-generation business model. When asked what Mr. Chip has in mind to implement the fusion chip scheme, a Samsung executive replied it is about creating new markets with multi-performance chips, as in the case of the OneDRAM.

The introduction of OneDRAM means that from now on, memory chips will become the most important part of mobile phone architecture, instead of CPUs, said Kim Sei-jin, vice president of Samsung’s memory division.  Kim also said that the same concept of fusing multiple chips into one can be extended to larger devices.

For example, the performance of PC can be improved when the functions of the main and graphic memories are combined into one fusion chip, he said. Samsung expects that mass production of the OneDRAM will begin next year and that the market will peak in 2008.
