Palm has made a couple of announcements at DigitalLife, a tradeshow held in New York City, the first being the unveiling of a new version of Treo phones, “Palm Treo 680 Smartphone.”
A GSM/GPRS/EDGE quad-band world phone, Treo 680 is packed with full features including stellar phone capability, such as email, web browsing, messaging, multimedia, calendar, contacts, and more. The company believes that it will appeal to price-sensitive feature-phone owners looking for a more capable mobile-computing device.
Talking about the new samrtphone, Ed Colligan, president and ceo, Palm, said “The Treo 680 is the smartphone for everyone. It’s small, sleek, fast and comes in a variety of fun colors. It’s a great phone design, great for messaging and email, and provides users easy and fast access to the Internet and to their favorite music and pictures, and makes it easy for people to manage and balance their business and personal lives while on the go.”
The Treo 680 with innovative design and integrated easy-to-use software, differentiates itself from the other Treo devices by offering new features along with many additional enhancements such as new design, and all-in-one smarter phone.
The new smartphone has an internal antenna and slim form factor, making the device smaller and sleeker than its predecessors.
Additionally, the Treo 680 can also be called an all-in-one smart phone as it has a unique phone user interface that further simplifies Treo innovations, such as the ability to respond to calls with a preset text message and add new phone numbers to existing contact information, and three-way calling. It also features integrated email and web capabilities and text-messaging conversations display as “threaded chats,” similar to IM.
The Treo 680 comes with 64MB of user-available storage, which is nearly three times the memory of the original Treo 650 smartphone, and also it supports additional memory storage of up to 2GB with expansion cards.
The other common features of the new smartphone include MP3 player, digital camera, camcorder and video player, while the enhanced features include improved web browser, multimedia, built-in dial-up networking (DUN) capabilities, and Bluetooth 1.2.
Another important feature of Treo 680 is the “documents to go” that enables viewing, editing, and sharing of Microsoft Office documents in addition to viewing Adobe PDF files and Powerpoint presentations.
According to Ed Colligan, president and ceo, Palm, the new smartphone is expected to be available via carriers around the world by June 1, 2007 and will be priced in a range around $200 (Rs. 9200). However, further details related to the product and its exact pricing will be released by carriers in the coming weeks and months.
Palm’s US retail and online stores will sell exclusively an unlocked GSM version of the new Palm Treo 680 smartphone in four new cool shades; red, orange, white, and silver.

In another announcement related to Treo 680, Palm has said that it expects to bring online 20 carriers for the new Treo 680 smartphone. Palm has also announced that it will deliver the popular interactive mapping experience of Google Maps on Treo smartphones.
The Google Maps for mobile optimized for Palm OS based Treo smartphones is available on all four Treo smartphone platforms including Treo 600 smartphone, Treo 650 smartphone, Treo 700p smartphone, and the new New Treo 680 smartphone. It is available for free download as Palm OS application.
