The great software architect, Bill Gates has come out swinging at a pile of Apple advertisements that have been saying the same mantra about Jobs’ Mob’s glorious OSX operating system. For a few months, Apple has been sending some fairly blunt advertisements over the airways saying that it is much more innovative and secure than anything made by Microsoft.
In an interview for Newsweek, Gates was showing off the latest Windows operating system Vista with its wonderful side bar, parental controls etc. Gates seemed to be hoping that the hack would not point out that this can already be done on a Mac, but he was out of luck. Instead the hack mentioned a phrase used in one of the Apple advertisements that stated you would need major surgery to upgrade to Vista. Gate said that Vista did a better job letting you upgrade on the hardware than our competitors (read Apple) have done.
He said at least with a PC you can choose to buy a new machine, or do an upgrade. Gates spat: “I don’t know why [Apple is] acting like it’s superior. I don’t even get it. What are they trying to say? Does honesty matter in these things, or if you’re really cool, that means you get to be a lying person whenever you feel like it? There’s not even the slightest shred of truth to it.”
Most Mac users will tell you that it is a doddle to upgrade a Mac. But Gates was not finished spitting, as the interviewer found out when he made the tired remark that Vole was following Apple when it came to innovation. Gates said that if you go through what is on the Apple on a feature by feature basis the truth is that Microsoft came up with everything first. Microsoft made a bit of a mistake, he says, by showing it all publicly and allowing Apple to nick it before Microsoft could get the security sorted out.
He also got hacked off at the comments that Apple was somehow more secure than Windows. He told Newsweek that security guys break the Mac every single day. He dared anybody to do that once a month on the Windows machine. Gates admits that it took Microsoft longer to come up with a decent user interface-wise. But it was Microsoft who came up with the file, edit, view, help, menu bar.
