IBM has launched a line of quad-core servers running on Intel’s Xeon 5300 chips. The announcement comes one day after Dell unveiled its own quad-core server range using the same Intel processors. The four IBM systems range from servers designed for small businesses, to rack-mount units for larger firms and a blade model.
Big Blue said that the new System x server range would have more memory and I/O capability than Dell’s, which the company claims will reduce information bottlenecks and result in better performance. IBM claimed that its quad-core servers run 64 per cent faster than the previous line of dual-core System x servers.
The company also announced three new software applications: a virtualisation manager; a systems management application; and PowerExecutive that helps users monitor and manage a system’s power consumption.
The release of IBM’s and Dell’s quad-core servers falls in line with estimates made by Intel in September, when the company demonstrated the quad core chips. At that time, Intel estimated that the first quad-core systems would ship in November, with widespread availability to home users by the first quarter of 2007.
