The time of the VHS is over and the time of the DVD is vastly becoming the norm for many people. Many Americans don’t even bother purchasing the VHS – no matter how cheap they may be – because they don’t own a VHS player. Yet even with the growing popularity and demand for DVD’s there is still competition out there in the form of digital downloads.
A number of consumers have discovered that they can watch their favorite movies through these digital downloads. Already this has become popular in the music world where all you have to do is pay 99 cents to download your favorite song from iTunes. Apple is taking their success one step further by creating a way for people to do the same with their favorite movies.
Apple announced that new releases and catalog titles will be available on iTunes day-and-date with the DVD releases from 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Lionsgate, Image Entertainment and First Look Studios.
Any movies that are purchased from Apple can be watched on their iPhone, PC or Mac computer, an iPod with video capability, or on any widescreen TV that has Apple TV. Each new release movie will be priced at $14.99 and older movies will be priced at $9.99. iTunes already has 1,500 films in stock.
Notable releases this week include American Gangster and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, which will join other recent movies Juno, Cloverfield, I Am Legend, There Will Be Blood and others. “We’re thrilled to bring iTunes Store customers new films for purchase day-and-date with the DVD release,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. “We think movie fans will love being able to buy their favorites from major and independent studios.”
