Apple is recalling the brand new ultra compact USB adapter plug that came with the new iPhone 3G handsets. According to the manufacturer the blades of the plug can snap off and remain lodged inside the electrical outlet. This creates a risk of people getting electrically shocked.
So far no injuries have been reported – but the company does not want to take any chances and is asking for users to take advantage of their new exchange program. Through this program they will receive stronger plugs. On the Apple website they said, “Customer safety is always Apple’s top priority, and therefore we have voluntarily decided to exchange every ultracompact power adapter for a new, redesigned adapter, free of charge.”
The new adapter is similar to the older one. The difference is that the blades on the new one taper slightly instead of being square at the ends. That and the new adapter have a small green dot on the bottom. The replacements will be available Friday, October 10th. In order to get your hands on one you can contact their customer service department through Apple’s adapter replacement program web site or visit an Apple Retail Store.
So what are iPhone users suppose to do until the replacement comes? Apple says that users need to stop using the old adapters right away and charge their phones using a USB port on their PC or Mac.
