iTunesApple iTunes is still the reigning king over digital music and they proved this when they reached one of their biggest milestone. They have sold over 5 billion songs since it first started in 2003. Their music catalog alone hold over 8 million tracks – which offer customers a variety of songs as well as over 20 thousand television episodes and more than 2 thousand movies. For those of you who are wondering many of those movies are offered in high-def.

But that music sales number is truly staggering. Only 1,880 days have passed since Apple first started selling music, in a move which confounded onlookers who recalled the trademark dispute between Apple Corps (The Beatles’ record label) and Apple Computer. A judge had decided at one point that Apple Computer could keep calling itself “Apple” so long as it never sold music. However, that issue was finally put to rest last year.

Back to the numbers. Dividing five billion songs by 1,880 days reveals that Apple has sold an average of over 2.6 million songs every day since the store opened on April 28, 2003. When you take into account that only Mac users could shop at the store for the first few months of its existence, this number is even more impressive. Although Apple has its detractors in the music industry, including major labels that want to sell music through the store at variable prices, its online music sales juggernaut is still running strong. Five billion songs in just over five years is a mind blowing volume of music by anyone’s reckoning.
