Oracle LogoOracle has decided to sell support to Red Hat Linux customers and offer its own free clone of the open-source operating system, posing a major competitive challenge to the leading Linux seller.  “As of this moment, Oracle is announcing full support for Red Hat Linux,” Chief Executive Larry Ellison told thousands of attendees at the Oracle OpenWorld conference here on Wednesday. “If you are a Red Hat support customer, you can very easily switch from Red Hat support to Oracle support.”

Amolops TomotusThe Amolops Tomotus or, the ”concave eared torrent frog” as they or called are the first amphibians to use ultrasound to communicate. Bats and dolphins and a few other species emit and hear ultrasonic noises but these are the first amphibians to have been found to have the capacity to do so. The research team was led by Albert S. Feng & M. Kowalczyk, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The small chinese frog species the Amolops tomotus, the “concave eared torrent frog.” As its name suggests, it has an unusual ear which is recessed rather than protruding. (The ear shape may be related to the frog’s hearing capacity, according to Feng). The “torrent” refers to its usual environment.

Firefox vs. Internet ExplorerTwo combatants Firefox and Internet Explorer are at war.  It’s hardly a secret that this pair of browsers are in nose-to-nose competition, and neither intends to give an inch. And while there are a few other contenders out there, these are the two that everyone is watching.

For a while, Firefox looked like it could actually make a major dent in what almost amounted to a Microsoft monopoly its innovative (although not original) tabbed browsing, straightforward interface, and its vast library of extensions (offering users the opportunity to configure their browsers exactly the way they liked it) made Firefox the Web equivalent of a folk hero. Perhaps because of this achievement, the much heralded version 2.0 offers a few major tweaks, but on the whole, doesn’t mess with success.
